Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speech writer. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos which include commentary on the depictions of women in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a site for education that examines women's role in the narratives of pop culture, is her brainchild. Additionally, she serves as the director of operations. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and other marginalized classes of people in the online space. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social thought and politics from York University. She is also a highly-respected public presenter. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very early stage of her life. In 2009, while continuing to study at the university level she started her Feminist Frequency web site. As of 2009, this determined young woman was targeted by the Internet for starting a web series on gender in videogames. She was not deterred by the assault, the fact is that it only bolstered her drive to become an expert on media and feminism. Many awards have been presented to her as a way of acknowledging her contributions to the field she made. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that explores the portrayals of women in popular culture of today.
